Yaqub Mirza – Dec 4, 2025 -VA

A Tribute to Our Beloved Brother, Dr. Yaqub Mirza
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

Today, our community received the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear brother, Dr. Yaqub Mirza, a man whose presence was a blessing, and whose departure leaves a void that words can scarcely capture. I have known Dr. Mirza since 1992, more than three decades of brotherhood, consultation, and learning. In all those years, I never once saw him withhold goodness, hesitate to help, or turn away from someone seeking guidance.

Dr. Mirza was, in every sense, a trusted reference point, the first person I would go to whenever the community faced a question of building, strengthening, or sustaining its institutions. Whether it was establishing an organization to support Islamic centers, exploring financial structures, or seeking advice on planning for the future, his wisdom was always available, and his counsel always sincere.

His door, both to his office and his heart, was perpetually open. You ask him for guidance? He never says “No.” Invite him to a masjid event, a seminar, a convention? He is always there, present, supportive, and engaged. Seek his insight about the future? He responds with humility, clarity, and a smile that never left his face.
The last time I met him was at the Islamic Relief Endowment Fund Conference. Even then, despite the many demands on his time, he welcomed me with his familiar warmth and attentiveness, sharing insights and wisdom as generously as ever.

He embodied the prophetic teaching:”أحبُّ الناسِ إلى اللهِ أنفعُهم للناسِ” “The most beloved of people to Allah are those who are most beneficial to others.”

Dr. Mirza lived this hadith with every breath. He gave without measure. He served without expectation. He advised without pride. He walked among us as a man of knowledge, yet with the heart of a humble servant of Allah.

His smile, always gentle, always sincere, was a reminder that leadership is not dominance, but service; not authority, but generosity; not titles, but character.

Today, we mourn a pillar of community service, a visionary of Islamic work in America, and a man whose quiet wisdom shaped institutions, inspired leaders, and strengthened hearts. But even more, we mourn a brother, a friend, and a companion in the path of Allah.

May Allah shower His mercy upon Dr. Yaqub Mirza, expand his grave with light, raise him among the righteous, and reward him for every masjid he supported, every organization he guided, every young leader he mentored, and every smile he gifted to his community.

May Allah have mercy on him and grant him the highest place in Jannah. He has returned to the One he served all his life. May his legacy continue through every good work he inspired. We belong to Allah, and to Him we all return.

I think you could easily say one of the most impactful Muslims of our era that most people in the community have not heard of.

When I visited IIUM a few years back, there were some of the sharpest students from all over the world who specifically named him as having deeply impacted their lives

His books, his insights, his forethought – all of it we benefitted from. Truly the debt we owe him as individuals and as a community is un-repayable. I feel blessed to have learned from his knowledge and more importantly from his amazing character. May Allah raise him amongst the Sabiqoon and include him amongst those who are the Nearest to Him. Allahumma Ameen.
